The most important sun festival, the Inti Raymi, is celebrated in June at the summer solstice. It begins on June 21 with the ritual bath, which is an act of purification that forms part of the agricultural calendar and the corn harvesting. It is one of the most outstanding expressions of the Indian culture due to its bright colors, outfits, music
and dances. In this canton the indigenous population holds this festival through a symbolic take-over of the town’s square by entering it from the four cardinal points, a celebration called “JATUM PUNCHA”.
